An International Seminar of Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and Other Human Sciences will be held in collaboration with IIT Gandhinagar during 27-28 January 2017 on the theme “The Enigma of Nature/The Enigma of the Non-Human”. The seminar is part of an ongoing series of seminars on “enigma” initiated by the Centre. The series began in 2011 with “The Enigma of Health” followed by “The Enigma of Happiness” (2012), “The Enigma of Pain” (2013), “The Enigma of Beauty” (2014), “The Enigma of Democracy” (February 2015) and “The Enigma of Law” (November 2015). The first Enigma seminar had started at IIT Gandhinagar, co-organized by the Humanities and Social Sciences discipline of IIT Gandhinagar.
Each seminar used a seminal text on the topic as a springboard for discussion. This year’s seminar has Franz Kafka’s short story "A Report to an Academy"(1917) and Nikolas Kompridis’s "Recognition and Receptivity: Forms of Normative Response in the Lives of the Animals We Are" (New Literary History, 2013, 44: 1 – 24) as the motivation.
