Short Course on Nonlinear Control and Applications

The course will expose participants to certain fundamental notions (mathematical machinery) in nonlinear control and representative applications. Beginning with the idea of existence and uniqueness of the solution of a differential equation, the ideas of phase portraits, equilibria and nature of equilibria will be introduced. This will be followed by 1. an affine-in-the-control nonlinear system model, 2. flows and Lie derivatives and 3. the Lie bracket. Lyapunov stability will then be introduced followed by the Lyapunov theorem and a few examples of control synthesis using Lyapunov functions. Another important control design in nonlinear systems called feedback linearization, and the associated machinery will follow. Applications in the field of bioreactor, mechanisms and robotic manipulators will be illustrated. Every two or three lecture-sessions will be followed by a tutorial to enable participants to exercise their minds and grasp concepts.
