Is there a conflict between the rights of children and the rights of teachers ?

November 16 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

In this talk, she will discuss whether there is a conflict between the rights of children (to be taught, right against discrimination, right to be treated with dignity etc…) and the rights of teachers (teacher management related) – and why the discourse on India’s school education is often caught in between the two. She will be drawing upon my work of the last 25 years to frame this question. There are no easy answers to this question and the very fact that millions of our children reach class 8 without basic reading writing skills is worrying. Equally worrying is widespread discrimination inside the classroom and in the school. Teachers have their rights too – however any effort to negotiate the terrain of the working conditions of teachers, how they are supervised/supported, what mechanisms exist to ensure teachers teach all children and ensure non discriminations in keeping with the spirit of the Constitution of India – invariably leads to debate on teachers, their entitlement and their rights. She will be posing these questions using evidence from my own work.Discipline/Coordinating Entity: Humanities and Social Sciences
