This presentation will examine characteristics of an ideal practice of multicultural education in the United States, with discussion of how these ideas might be applicable in India. Cultural and language diversity in America is increasing, but most American schools still reflect the dominant white culture in which only American English is spoken. The work of Dr. Sonia Nieto and other advocates for multicultural education will be explained. How might multicultural concepts apply to India’s cultural and linguistic diversity? Are there other ideas and practices developed in India to address diversity?
