Sustainability and India’s Water Safety Issues vis-à-vis Waste water Management

October 23 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am

Water quality and quantity are becoming increasingly a very important issue not only in India but also across the world. However, in India the inequitable distribution of water within the country also poses a much complex problem. Poor quality drinking water and inadequate sanitation are the ma- jor causes for early mortality and disease & economic burden for communi- ties in developing countries. Frequent water born disease outbreaks in different cities across the country indicates that despite cities better water sup- ply status, quality remains a major problem to resolve. The water scarcity problems can be addressed to a greater extent through low cost waste water treatment, recycle and reuse as new water resources. Natural based technology can resolve this issue not only for treatment but also for ground water recharge. The other major issue of water quality can be addressed through adoption of Water Safety Plan. WSP uses techniques for rehabilitation of supply network through application of GIS with a view to delineate the methodologies which can improve the water quality of a city.Discipline/Coordinating Entity: Earth Science
