Would we be better teachers if we learnt music or painting or theatre?

November 9 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Imagination and intuition are up against the irresistible forces of software simulations. Both sides argue their case persuasively but does the debate bring the two sides closer? Perhaps not as often as one would have liked. A lot of what is done in engineering and science has its origins in music and art. It is unfortunate that our education system continues to perpetuate the myth that the arts and the sciences are two distinct and incompatible fields of study. It is not only possible but also necessary to convey the technicalities of engineering and science to the student in an intuitive manner that does not require prior knowledge of math or science. In this talk, we would aim to use music to explore some aspects of high-speed communications technology that is at the heart of all our email and online activities.
